Do you need a chatbot or an answering service?

Both promise the same thing — you stop missing enquiries. They do it at opposite ends of the problem, and picking the wrong one means paying for something that never touches your actual bottleneck.

Answer this first

Where do your enquiries arrive now? Not where you wish they did — where they actually do. Check your phone log and your website analytics for the same month.

If it is mostly phone, an answering service is solving your problem and website chat is not. If a meaningful share of people find you online and never call, the reverse.

Most established trades find it is genuinely both, weighted by how old their customer base is.

What an answering service does better

Real people. They handle nuance, hear the panic in someone's voice, book appointments, and deal with the caller who cannot describe what is wrong. Nothing automated matches that.

They are also priced accordingly, usually per call or per minute, which means the busy months cost more — exactly when you can least predict costs. We compared the models in Mazingi vs Smith.ai.

What website chat does better

It catches the people who would never have called at all. That is the part contractors underestimate: a large share of website visitors research quietly, at night, and rule you in or out without ever ringing. An answering service cannot help you there because the phone never rang.

It is also flat-priced, answers everyone at once during a demand spike, and asks the same qualifying questions every time without getting tired at 9pm.

What neither does

Close the job. Both hand you a qualified conversation and stop. The quote, the trust and the price are still yours.

Be suspicious of anything claiming otherwise.

A reasonable order

  1. Fix the website first if you have traffic — it is cheaper and catches losses you currently cannot see. What that costs.
  2. Add call answering when phone volume is genuinely overwhelming you rather than annoying you.
  3. Reassess after a season. The mix changes as your customer base ages.
