Shared leads vs exclusive leads: what the difference is worth
- lead generation
- costs
Two lead sellers quote you the same price. One sends the enquiry to you alone. The other sends it to four contractors. Those are not the same product, and the price difference should be enormous.
What sharing does to the maths
If four of you get the same enquiry and the homeowner picks roughly at random, your chance of the job is a quarter of what it would be alone. So a shared lead at $50 is, in expected terms, closer to a $200 exclusive lead.
Worse, the race changes your behaviour. You call faster, quote lower, and chase harder — all of which costs something that never appears on the invoice.
The speed tax
Shared leads reward whoever responds first, not whoever does the best work. That pushes contractors into checking their phone during jobs, undercutting on price to win a race, and quoting before properly understanding scope.
You end up buying work you would not have chosen at prices you would not have set.
Where exclusive leads come from
There are only really three sources:
Referrals. Best conversion, unpredictable volume, cannot be bought.
Your own website. Someone searched, found you, and arrived. Nobody else got that enquiry. The catch is that most contractor sites do not capture them — the visitor arrives, finds nothing useful, and leaves without a trace. Fixing that is the cheapest exclusivity available, and we worked through the numbers in what Angi leads actually cost.
Genuinely exclusive paid leads. They exist and they cost accordingly. Check carefully — some sellers describe a lead as exclusive when it means exclusive to your trade, not to you.
The question to ask any lead seller
How many other contractors receive this enquiry?
If the answer is anything other than "none", divide the value accordingly before comparing prices. And ask what happens when the homeowner does not respond — some sellers credit you, most do not.
What to do with the answer
Work out your cost per booked job rather than per lead, for each source you use. Then compare. Most contractors find their own website is the cheapest source by a wide margin and the one they have invested in least — see how the numbers compare.
